Mangalore (or Mangaluru) is an Arabian Sea port and a major commercial center in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Mangalore, located in South Kanara district of Karnataka, has been a major trading center for centuries. It was originally the capital of the Alupa rulers from the early Christian era until the 14th century, after which it came under the rule of the Vijayanagara dynasty and Portugues.Mangalore was named after the Hindu deity Mangaladevi, the presiding deity of the temple According to local legend, a princess from Malabar named Parimala or Premaladevi renounced her kingdom and became a disciple of Matsyendranath, the founder of the Nath tradition.

It is also believed that the city derived its name from the temple of Goddess Mangaladevi.

Yakshagana is believed to have evolved from the ancient Bhutha-worship prevalent in South Canara.yakshagana, dance-drama of South India, associated most strongly with the state of Karnataka. Elaborate and colourful costumes, makeup, and masks constitute some of the most-striking features of the art form. Traditionally, yakshagana was performed in the open air by all-male troupes sponsored by various Hindu temples.

Huli Vesha is performed to pay tribute to Goddess Durga, whose official animal is tiger.Tiger dance is a folk dance form of Dakshina Kannada in coastal Karnataka offered as a sacrifice to the Goddess during Navaratri.

The annual buffalo race Kambala is a unique festival observed by the farming community of coastal Karnataka. The distinctive sporting spectacle includes the traditional buffalo race, a renowned and peculiar sport among the state's farming community.
